Any tips for us?

We're getting ready to start our first family vacation. Hooray!! We're headed off to our lovely NC coast later this morning. We have a beach house for a week, we have tons of beach gear, my dear-most-favorite-ist niece (she is SO AWESOME) and her husband (Leslie and Jason) are joining us on the coast on Tuesday night. They are flying in from Arizonia and then we come back to town on Friday. We've not really had the chance to get to know Jason yet so we're both really looking forward to being with them all week. (rumor is that Jason pretty much rocks...) Our best old friend, Bob, is flying in on Friday night. Bob is basically like my brother...I've known him almost 25 years and Ed's known him since they were literally 2 yrs old and in the sandbox together. Then more family arrives on Friday night and we have the girls' baptism and big party on Saturday. If I sound a little "rambly" right now, it's 'cause I am 'cause I'm just so excited about everything: first real family vacation, first time on the coast for me in just ages and ages, first time I've seen Leslie and Jason in years, first time we'll get to know Jason well, first time Sammi and Nicki have been to the coast, first time we've had a nice size party at our house....whew. Oh, yeah, the place we're renting has pools, too, so this'll be their first time in a pool..... :)

So......does anyone have any good tips for us about taking two 22 month old toddlers to the coast for a week? I know you guys are so much more experienced than I ams o I'm looking for tips.... :)

Ahhh....., I'm already smelling the ocean air....

Hey you. Oh, I wish I were going with you. We just returned from our mini first va-kay to the Outer Banks in April. Girls loved the ocean and were fearless! Running straight into the frigid waters. I would stay on their heels unless you yourself want to go into that icey cold water! ha ha... Also take plenty of beach stuff for kids to play with. If you don't have or forget plenty of places to buy a shovel and bucket. I don't need to tell you--SUNSCREEN and HATS.

I don't know how far you are driving but my girls are good for about 4-5 hours in the car before they get frustrated being in the car seats. Even with a video. Bring things for them to play with in the car too.

My babies took their afternoon nap (no crying either-shocking) and we were able to put them down about 9:00pm (yea, later than normal) for bed(no crying) so that mommy and daddy could play. The neat thing about the homes in the OBX is (I had a builder from OBXshare this with me) the homes there are built with extra insulation on the interior walls to sound proof them better. You couldn't hear a thing from the bedroom once the door was closed. Girls slept like angels! We had no problem with diet or anything--they ate everything. Don't worry--you're going to be ok. Trust me. I can't wait to see the pictures!

Cindy,
Sounds like a fabulous vacation, can't wait to see pictures of your cuties at the beach! Sounds fun with family and friends.
Along with what Rony shared, be sure to bring something familiar for them at night... special blanket, pillow, or stuffed animal. Something that will comfort them in their new surroundings. :)
Have fun,
Dianne

Plan to drive, if you can, during their best times. Don't do what some inexperienced moms and dads do and wait until after their nap. Yes, we did that. Also, if you are worried about hearing your little ones at night while far away from them, say at a bonfire, bring the baby monitor, helps with peace of mind. DVD absolute must for a long drive. My girls right now are into doodling (27 months), but you might want to try those mini-magna doodles for the trip. Bring a bag full of new, inexpensive toys, (Dollar stores are great place to find little inexpensive portable gadgets), to pull out every so often when the boredom of the long drive sets in. Snacks that they LOVE will help with their moods also.....as well having their favourite stuffed animal with them on the drive in the car.
Hope this helps a little, and I hope you have a great time. Sounds like a blast and be sure to post some pics when you get home.

Jason and I had the greatest time with you, Ed, and the girls! He keeps talking about how much he is in love with those girls and how nice you and Ed are. We've been sharing positive reflections about the whole trip everyday since we've been back. Here is a quote I read the other day that truly exemplifies you and Ed as parents.
"The best gift parents can give to their children is themselves." We had the most beautiful wonderful time experiencing your love, hospitality, friendship, and remarkable parenting skills! Give those cuties a big hug from us. We miss you already. Seymour Johnson is sounding better and better. Thank you for everything. I'm so blessed to have you as family AND best friends! Love you guys!

Hi Cindy (& Ed),

We met you at the White Swan -- let's see if you remember us!

Our daughter, Katie, is from Yangdong SWI and, according to her referral info, "she shared a crib" with your daughters! I've wondered so many times how te four of you are doing ~~ now I can see for myself!

My sister, Karen, who travelled with us (whom you also met at the WS) sent me a link to your blog, and I'm so glad she did! Sammi & Nikki are absolutely adorable and growing up so fast!

We're also just back from a family vacation -- oh it's so good to be home! I haven't yet posted anything about it, but I'd love for you to come over and visit and see what our sweet Katie has been doing in the last 7 1/2 months!

Truly Blessed (aka Katie's & her 3 big brothers' mom)
